The Story Behind ASMR

Ten Years in the Making

In 2016, Jonathan David made a decision that would take a decade to fully realise. Having spent years working in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector — at facilities run by Shell and later Renaissance Africa Energy — he had seen firsthand what world-class maintenance and reliability looked like, and how far the gap was between that standard and the average practice across Africa’s industrial landscape.

The question that drove him was not abstract. It was operational. Why do African plants run with lower reliability than they should? Why do African maintenance professionals lack access to the same quality of peer exchange, certification support, and technical community that practitioners in North America and Europe take for granted? And what would it take to build that infrastructure on this continent?

The Maintenance Institute Africa, which Jonathan founded, became the first answer. Through TMI Africa, he built an annual conference series — The Maintenance Summit — that grew from a small gathering in Port Harcourt to a recognised continental event attracting practitioners, industry leaders, and international speakers. He ran CMRP preparatory programmes, trained over 300 professionals across three continents, and built a community that proved there was both the hunger and the talent to support a serious professional society in Africa.

Along the way, Jonathan achieved what few professionals on the continent have managed: he became a Certified Maintenance and Reliability Professional (CMRP), a Certified Reliability Leader (CRL), a Six Sigma Black Belt (CSSBB), a Fellow of the Institute of Management Consultants (FIMC), and a Certified Management Consultant (CMC). He delivered over $11 million in documented maintenance savings at Shell, reduced operational plant trips by 96%, and received the Senior Vice President’s Award for Digitalisation and Technology Impact in 2022.

ASMR — the African Society for Maintenance and Reliability — is the culmination of that decade of work. It is the formal professional body that the continent’s maintenance and reliability community has needed and deserved. A place to belong. A standard to aspire to. A voice that speaks for the profession in Africa, to Africa, and about Africa — on a global stage.

Jonathan serves as the Founding President of ASMR, bringing to the role not just his credentials and career, but the lived experience of building something from nothing in an environment where the default answer was always that it could not be done.

“We are already changing the face of this continent. All we do is lead the way and provide the platform for professionals to connect, share knowledge, and hatch opportunities for growth.”
